This place is always empty and now I know why. The service doesn’t match the super high prices. I came here for dinner on Jan 1st and the waiter kept getting the order wrong. I kept having to correct him. One of my dishes was overcooked, then when I ordered an expensive entree but the waiter failed to tell me that they had run out of a good portion of the ingredients. The dish normally comes in a box with each ingredient in a compartment but they couldn’t serve it in the box because they were lacking so many ingredients. When I noticed that the dish was lacking I refused it as it wasn’t what I ordered. They even served it in a different serving dish it was so altered from the original dish. He brought out a bunch of fish just piled up on a plate. I refused the dish. This just wasn’t what I had ordered. At that point, the waiter then became so angry it was comical. Making a huge spectacle of rage and stating at the top of his lungs, “I don’t want you to come here anymore”. At which point I asked to speak to the manager as I had been there many times without problems. This spectacle felt out of place and just ridiculous. It is his responsibility to let me know if half of the ingredients are out of stock, not the other way around. How am I supposed to know? He blamed the whole thing on me, how was it my fault that they ran out of the ingredients, I don’t know. He seemed to be shouting at the top of his lungs to put on a show for the sushi chefs. Then said “I don’t ever want to be your server anymore”. To this my response was “Is that a promise? Because I get along well with the other servers, if you promise to stay away from me from now on, we have a deal!” This place is over priced and usually empty for a reason. I am not even offended, the interaction was so staged and ridiculous! I just think that people can get better at other places. Quality restaurants are all over this area. This place is always empty for a reason- personally I liked the quiet of it all. There was never anyone there. It was great! I was a restaurant critic years ago. This is a two star restaurant with a Michelin price tag. Definitely not worth it. How they pay the rent I don’t know, half of the time you can hear a pin drop! Which is a huge departure from other more popular restaurants in Greenwich. To be fair, the younger male waiter is always in good spirits and tries to make your experience great. I just think that the older waiters and staff don’t like their job if you ask me. You can’t make this up!!! The whole time I just look over laughing to myself at the spectacle. It just felt like he was putting on some show. Once he said that he didn’t want to be my server ever again, I just cracked up inside… dude, is that a promise because I will hold you to that comment. If you want to spend $100 on lunch and have the waiter scream at you because THEY got it wrong, this is the place to be. My goodness, what a crazy experience! Just can’t make it up. Update: I went back two weeks later. He was still working there because he lied to the management and said that the server was the problem. But I came in around 1pm and he was the only server or person managing and serving the place. The photo is what the dish is supposed to look like. But it was all piled up on a plate because it was mostly Salmon. Go to HANOKI on Greenwich Ave. That restaurant is ALIVE!!! Update to the owner's response: Although I appreciate the owner's kind response, I hope that it is sincere. I didn't write this review lightly. I am a regular at this restaurant. I hope that management actually does make changes to the service staff. I will let you all know this particular waiter is still working at the restaurant when I check back in a month. We all know that if we pulled a stunt like this at work, we would lose our jobs no questions asked. There were witnesses, there are no excuses. Period.

Terrific omakase for the price. I think they did a great job conversing with the folks at the bar and on a Sunday night it was a very quiet and intimate atmosphere. I only knocked the stars down one because I called to head to ask if they use real wasabi root and they said yes and then when I got to the restaurant and asked to see it they made some fumblings with their words to try to come up with the idea that they pre-grind it and freeze it so there's no actual root to see which seemed a little bit suspect. They were also trying to sell the concept that the rice and the fish and all the components in the omakase are better than what they serve out in the regular restaurant but they were literally making the sushi for the regular restaurant at the omakase table so I'm not sure if that's actually true or not. Regardless it was good, great service, great atmosphere I would recommend
